Hollards Family History

OUR HISTORY

The history of E.G. Hollard & Son stretches all the way back to 1850 when Ernest George Hollards great grandfather, Emmanuel Hollard (1824-1898) established a Woodyard & Weigh Bridge business in Frewville, South Australia. That business was taken over by his son, Caleb Charles Hollard (1848 - 1923), followed by his son, Frederick E. Hollard (1875 - 1925), and then his son Ernest George Hollard (1878 - 1965), the 'EG' of E.G. Hollard & Son. Ernest George ran the business in Frewville before moving it to it's current location in Mitcham (Hawthorn) in 1915. Ernest was the fourth generation of Hollards to be involved in the family business.

Gordon Wesley Hollard (1913-1993) worked with his father, Ernest, in the business, until he and his wife, Betty (1915–1990), assumed management and ownership. A sixth generation of Hollards, Gordon and Betty’s sons, Anthony and Christopher, worked in the business, eventually joining their parents in partnership. The business was sold out of the Hollard family in 1989, and then sold again to the current owner, Joe Leck, in 2015.

The Burnside Council’s history of street names records that Hollard Street in Frewville was named after the Hollard family, and that Frederick Street in Frewville was ‘probably named after Frederick E. Hollard (1875-1925) who owned a wood and chaff mill in the vicinity”. Thus, Hollards has been associated with small business in Adelaide from its early days and possibly back to circa 1850-60. Six generations within the business, from say 1860-1989, suggests that the current Hollards might reasonably boast - Established for over 150 years.

Current owner Joe Leck, who purchased the business in 2015, is proud to continue the legacy of our founder Ernest George Hollard & the generations that followed, by upholding the same values that made E.G. Hollard & Son successful for so many years.  Hollards remains a family-run business and we are proud to be one of the longest-standing companies in the area. We strive to bring our customers the highest quality products, excellent customer service and competitive prices and we look forward to continuing to serve the local community for years to come.
